Jetzt ist es wieder eine Woche vorbei, der Stress abgeklungen und alle Sachen wieder verräumt. Letzes Wochenende, am 16. und 17. April 2016 fand in Wien zum ersten Mal eine Maker Faire statt, bei der ich wie in der Ankündigung mit 3 Projekten dabei war. Die beiden Workshops, den Lightbug-Roboter und den Holzflieger nach den Entwürfen von Leonardo da Vinci, habe ich ja bereits angekündigt. Zusätzlich hatte ich noch einen eigenen Stand mit Holzmodellen nach Skizzen von Leonardo da Vinci, wie man ihn schön am Foto unten sieht. Im Anschluss würde ich gern ein wenig von meinen Erfahrungen mit der Maker Faire berichten.

It has already been a week, the stress is gone and all stuff put back where it belongs. I am talking about the Maker Faire which took place in Vienna the first time on April the 16th and 17th. As I announced about a month ago, I participated with 3 projects in total. First the 2 workshops, with the Lightbug robot and the Leonardo da Vinci inspired glider, but also with my own booth where I presented wood models inspired by Leonardo da Vinci sketches as you can see in the picture below. In the following part of this post I would like to describe some of my experiences at the Maker Faire.


Den Anfang würde ich gleich mit dem Roboter-Workshop machen. Dieser fand gleich zu Beginn des ersten Tages, dem Samstag, schon um 11:00 statt. Ich hatte im Vorhinein befürchtet dass dieser Workshop aufgrund des hohen Unkostenbeitrags von 35€und der frühen Startzeit eher mäßig besucht sein würde. Meine Befürchtung stellte sich als vollkommen falsch heraus, schon 15 Minuten vor Beginn war er ausgebucht und ich musste leider einigen motivierten Bastlern eine Absage erteilen! Wie ich vom Veranstalterteam am Abend erfahren durfte, haben ab 10:00 bereits viele Besucher herumgefragt wo der Roboter-Workshop stattfindet. Nachdem der Workshop auch im Vorhinein schon auf der Facebook-Seite der Maker Faire beworben worden war, nehme ich an, dass es zum Teil daran lag. Zum Workshop selbst ziehe ich ein Fazit mit gemischten Gefühlen, es konnten am Ende zwar alle ihren funktionierenden Roboter mit heim nehmen, aber ich musste ordentlich überziehen und in letzter Minute bzw. im Anschluss daran am Metalab-Stand den Lötkolben ausborgen um den einen oder anderen Roboter zu reparieren. Zusätzlich lief der Workshop einfach unheimlich stressig ab, da ich mit den 15 Teilnehmern, die unterschiedlich schnell vorwärts kamen zum Teil überfordert war. Das machte es auch sehr schwierig die einzelnen Schritte vorzuzeigen so dass auch alle sehen konnten was zu tun ist. Fürs nächste Mal werde ich auf jeden Fall mehr Zeit einplanen und mir zumindest für die letzte Stunde Unterstützung organisieren. Um mit etwas positiven abzuschließen, alle hatten sichtlich Spaß, konnten hoffentlich ein wenig dazulernen und haben am Schluss ihren eigenen Roboter mitnehmen können. Nachfolgend noch ein paar Fotos vom Workshop die mir ein Freund netterweise machte.

I would like to start right away with my robot building workshop which took place on the first day already at 11:00. Because of the quite high price for the materials and the early start time I expected the workshop not to be full. However, it turned out I was wrong because the workshop was full already 15 minutes before the starting time! As I was told later that day by one of the organisers people were asking around already at 10:00 where the robot workshop will take place. I guess the popularity was because it was featured before on the Facebook page of the Vienna Maker Faire. My conclusion of the workshop is one with mixed feelings because even though everyone had their own working robot at the end, I had to take some extra time after the workshop and also fix some minor mistakes with a solder iron at the Metalab booth. Also, the workshop was extremely stressful because I had 15 participants of which some were faster with assembling the robot than others and I wasn’t really able to cope with that. Especially showing the indivual assembly steps to everyone was a bit tricky. The next time I am going to make such a workshop I’ll definetly need assistance for at least the last hour of the workshop. To end with something different than only critism, it was really great to see everyone had fun at the workshop, I hope most participants also learned a bit and will have fun with their self assembled robot. Mein zweiter Workshop am Sonntag lief dann abgesehen vom Schluss etwas entspannter ab, wobei ich auch hier die Zeit dafür etwas knapp bemessen hatte, selbst dafür, dass statt 15 nur 10 Kinder mitbastelten (mehr hätten auch nicht wirklich am Tisch Platz gehabt). Durch die tatkräftige Mithilfe der Eltern musste ich auch wenig beim Kleben aushelfen und mit kurzer Verlängerung des Workshops hatten am Ende alle einen Holzgleiter fertig (und vor Kleber triefend… ;) ). Was ich mir bei beiden Workshops gewünscht hätte, wäre eine Schritt für Schritt Anleitung für den Zusammenbau um in den stressigeren Situationen darauf verweisen zu können. The second workshop then took place on Sunday and was, except for the last minutes, a lot less stressful even though even here I also could have used a bit more time. Thankfully there were only 10 kids attending instead of the 15 I initially planned (there was no free space for 5 additional participants anyway). Thanks to helping hands of some of the parents I didn’t even need to assist so much with the glueing and at the end everyone had a finished (an glue soaked… ;) ) glider. One thing I missed at both workshops was a step by step instruction sheet for the assembly. Well, probably I’ll make one for the next workshop. Zuletzt möchte ich noch von meinen Erfahrungen mit dem Stand berichten, die einzelnen Modelle stelle ich später detailliert vor. Ich hatte für meinen Stand naiverweise einfach Bilder meines Gleiters mit einem Text eingereicht wo ich verschiedene Modelle nach Leonado da Vincis Zeichnungen versprochen hatte. Die musste ich dann auch in den 5 Wochen zwischen Zusage für meinen Stand und der Maker Faire auch wirklich bauen. Ich habe mir einerseits 3 Modelle zum Ausstellen (Panzerwagen, Fallschirm und natürlich der Gleiter) und auch etwas interaktives, in Form der selbst tragenden Brücke zum Zusammenbauen am Stand, überlegt. Die Brücke hatte ich in 2 Varianten dabei, einerseits die einfachere Version mit ineinandergreifenden Teilen und einmal die etwas schwierigere, welche nur aus rechteckigen Brettern besteht. Eigentlich hatte ich mir das mit dem Stand so vorgestellt, dass ich mein Zeug dort hinstelle, hin und wieder jemand vorbeikommt, sich meine Modelle ansieht und dann wieder weiterschaut. Ganz so entspannt war das ganze dann doch nicht, ich hatte fast durchgehend regen Betrieb an meinem Stand. Am meisten überraschte mich dass es die Brücke zum selber bauen war, welche die meisten Besucher an meinem Stand hielt. Als zweites habe ich auch nicht mit der relativ großen Anzahl an Anfragen zum Kauf von Bausätzen gerechnet bzw. überhaubt dass jemand etwas kaufen will! Ich hatte deswegen auch keine Visitenkarten vorbereitet, welche ich hergeben hätte können. Jedenfalls bin ich aufgrund des Feedbacks und des Interesses an meinen Designs gerade dabei diese für den Verkauf aufzubereiten. Wenn es so weit ist, werde ich natürlich davon berichten. Nachfolgend gibt es unter diesem Absatz noch einige Fotos vom Betrieb an meinem Stand.

The last thing I’d like to talk about my experiences with my booth but without a detailed presentation of the individual models which I will post later. For my booth I simply turned in some pictures of my glider with a description promising other models according to Leonado da Vincis sketches.Well after the confirmation for my booth I also had to design and build them in 5 weeks before the Maker Faire. So I made 3 models for display (The armoured car, parachute and the glider of course) on the one hand and something interactive, like the self supportig bridge for the visitors to build it, on the other hand. There were 2 versions of the bridge, the easy one with interlocking parts and the hard one with just straight boards. I expected that I will put my models on disply at my booth and from time to time someone would stop by and have look at it. However in reality there was always busy operation at my booth with people mainly being interested in my bridges. Also I didn’t expect there would be so many people who would have bought a kit of the bridge or other models. Well, I didn’t expect requests for acquiring some of my stuff at all, so I didn’t even bring business cards which I could give to the interested people. Now that I know that there is interest in my models I will prepare them for sale and of course post about it once you can buy something. Zum Abschluss möchte ich nur sagen dass es für mich ein echt schönes, obwohl stressiges Wochenende mit vielen tollen Menschen war. Ich freue mich auch die Maker Faire nächstes Jahr, an der ich garantiert wieder teilnehmen werde.

Last, I would like to say that it was a wonderful, even though it was very stressful, weekend with many great people. I’m looking forward to the Maker Faire next year which I will surely attend too.
