Serverschrank mit Stil / Server cabinet with style

Manche Projekte beginnen mit einer Idee der Art „Wäre es nicht lustig wenn…“. Zu Beginn klingen sie nach wenig Arbeit und entwickeln sich dann zu genau dem Gegenteil. Dieses ist ein Projekt dieser Art. Heuer im Winter wurden und im Zuge der Renovierung des Hauptraums im Metalab die alten, kaputten Spanplattentüren des Serverschranks (also die Mauernische mit der Netzwerkinfrastruktur) entsorgt, da dachte ich mir dass es doch recht lustig wäre wenn da eine Altbau-Doppelflügeltür hinkäme. Gedacht, Getan und eine passende Tür wurde auf Willhaben aufgetrieben, ins Auto geschlichtet und nach Wien ins Metalab gebracht.

Some projects start with words like „Wouldn’t it be funny if…“. Also at first they just seem to be really easy before they develop into the exact opposite. This project is one of these. When the main room at Metalab was renovated in winter this year they also removed the old, broken doors from the server cabinet (the alcove which houses the network infrastructure). I thought it would be a funny idea to replace them with a double door in Gründerzeit style. So I found a matching door on Willhaben, stuffed it into the car and brought it to Vienna to Metalab.

Hacking in Innsbruck

Letztes Wochenende, vom 07. bis 09.04.2017,  lud das IT-Syndikat in Innsbruck Leute aus allen Hackerspaces in Österreich und Umgebung zum Geekend ein. Das ganze war ein sehr entspanntes Wochenende in mit interessanten Vorträgen, Workshops und hervorragendem Essen in einer unglaublich leiwanden Umgebung. Zum Geekend trafen wir uns im Kochlokal, das ist ein gemeinnütziger Verein der Infrastruktur in Form einer Küche und weiteren Sozialräumen zur Verfügung stellt. Im selben Haus, direkt im Stockwerk darüber, sitzt das Fablab, welches auch zum selben Verein gehört. Und zusätzlich befindet sich das Gebäude nur 50m vom IT-Syndikat, dem Innsbrucker Hackerspace, der sich die Räumlichkeiten mit dem Kunstverein Cunst & Co mit einer Siebdruckwerkstatt teilt, entfernt. Nachdem das zusammen eine wirklich coole, inspirierende Umgebung ist habe ich versucht das ein wenig festzuhalten. Fangen wir also mit dem Hackerspace an, der sich im ersten Stock eine Gewerbegebäudes, oberhalb eines Nachtclubs befindet und sich auch den Eingang mit diesem teilt.

Last weekend, from 7th – 8th of April 2017, the IT-Syndikat from Innsbruck invited people from hackerspaces all over Austria and the surrounding countries to a visit for the Geekend. It happend to be a really relaxing weekend with interesting talks,workshops and delicious food in a awesome surrounding.For the geekend we met at the Kochlokal which is non-commercial and provides infrastructure like a kitchen and rooms for socialising. Located in the same building, just a floor higher you can find the Fablab which belongs to the same association. Additionally this building happens to be just 50m apart from the IT-Syndikat, the local hackerspace which shares its rooms with the art society Cunst & Co which has a screen printing workshop. Everything together makes up a really awesome and inspiring neighbourhood so I tried to capture a bit of it. Let’s start with the hackerspace which resides in the first floor of a former industrial building just above a night club and shares the entrance with it.

Besuch im London Hackspace / Visiting the London Hackspace

Diesen Monat machte ich eine Woche Urlaub in London, was ich unheimlich cool fand. Doch ich will hier jetzt niemanden mit hunderten Bildern vom Big Ben, der Tower Bridge und anderen Sehenswürdigkeiten quälen (Das bleibt der Familie vorbehalten :D), sondern nur vom London Hackspace berichten. Für einen Bastler wie mich ist der Besuch des lokalen Hackspaces in einer fremden Stadt natürlich Pflicht, da man immer interessante Dinge sieht und coole Leute trifft. Der Hackspace liegt nicht zu weit vom Zentrum Londons entfernt und lässt sich mit einigen Buslinien sehr gut erreichen. Nachdem ich bisher nur kleine Spaces kannte, wirkte er erst einmal gigantisch, denn die Räumlichkeiten erstrecken sich über 2 Stockwerke. Im Oberen befinden sich die Gesellschaftsräume, Elektronikwerkbänke, Lasecutter und alle anderen „sauberen“ Arbeitsplätze. Der Lasercutter war zum Zeitpunkts meines Besuchs leider außer Betrieb…

This month I travelled to London for a really great week. Here, in my Blog I don’t want to torture you with hundreds of pictures of Big Ben, Tower Bridge and the other famous sights (Thats reserved for my family :D). Instead I want to show you around the London Hackspace. For me it’s obligatory to visit a hackspace in a foreign city because you see awesome things and meet interesting people. It’s located not too far from the center of London and can easily be reached by some bus lines. Since I only knew small spaces this one seemed gigantic to me, it extends over 2 floors. In the ground floor there are all the social rooms, the electronics bench, the lasercutter and all other „clean“ workspaces. Sadly, the lasercutter wasn’t working when I was there…
