Leonardo da Vinci-Brücke mal ganz groß / Leonardo da Vinci bridge going big

Nachdem meine vereinfachte, selbsttragende Leonardo da Vinci-Brücke bei allen bisherigen Maker Faires wirklich gut angekommen ist hab ich mir irgendwann mal gedacht wäre es nicht richtig leiwand diese Brücke auch groß zu bauen? Also so groß dass Kinder nachher drüber klettern können. Diese Idee habe ich dann gleich für die Maker Faire Vienna 2017 umgesetzt.

Since visitors of all Maker Faires where I have been displaying my models liked the self supporting Leonardo da Vinci bridge I thought it would be really awesome to make a bigger one. By big I mean at a scale that children can climb it when it is assembled. So I set off to realise it for the Maker Faire Vienna 2017.

Maker Faire Berlin 2016 recap

Mein letzer Beitrag ist zwar einige Monate her, allerdings war ich in dieser Zeit nicht untätig. Einerseits habe ich in der Zwischenzeit mein Masterstudium abgeschlossen und andererseits habe ich so einige andere Projekte (vor allem einiges im Metalab) angefangen und teilweise auch fertig gebracht. Über einige kann ich hoffentlich bald etwas berichten, eines werde ich jetzt gleich vorstellen. So ganz weiß ich noch immer nicht was ich mir dabei gedacht habe, aber jedenfalls hatte ich mich heuer für die Maker Faire Berlin angemeldet. Nach dem überaus spannenden Wochenende bei der Maker Faire in Wien war ich auch dort mit den Holzmodellen nach Leonardo da Vinci vor Ort. Zum Zeitpunkt der Anmeldung war mein Zeitplan meiner Masterarbeit so, dass ich bis zum Wochenende an dem die Maker Faire stattfand damit fertig sei. Wie immer kam natürlich alles anders als geplant und ich war bis direkt vor der Abfahrt nach Berlin am Donnerstag Nachmittag am Schreiben der Rohfassung, welche ich aber zum Glück fertig brachte. An diesem Wochenende hatte ich somit den Kopf frei von der Arbeit und konnte die Maker Faire voll genießen.

My last entry was already some months ago but I wasn’t on idle in this time. Well, first I finished my masters degree and also I am quite busy now with lots of projecs (some of them in the Metalab). Soon I hope I can write up a little about some of these projects one of them I’d like to present right here. Up to date I still don’t know what I was thinking, but I applied for the Maker Faire Berlin. After the amazing weekend at the Maker Faire Vienna I decided to take my Leonardo da Vinci models to Berlin. When I registered I thought I would have my masters thesis done before the Maker Faire but as usual not everything went as planned and I was writing on the first version of my thesis directly before leaving off to berlin, which I could finish and send in for review. That way I had my head free from all that stuff over the weekend and I could enjoy the Maker Faire.

Hier ist er, der erste versprochene Beitrag zu meinen Ausstellungsobjekten von der Maker Faire in Wien. Den Anfang möchte ich gleich mit dem beliebtesten Objekt an meinem Stand machen, der selbststützenden Brücke.

Here it is, the promised blog entry regarding the things I had on display at Maker Faire Vienna. I’d like to start with the favorite object of my booth, the self supporting bridge.

Lightbug v1.1

Wie nicht zu übersehen war, habe ich an der Maker Faire in Wien heuer den Lightbug Roboter-Workshop angeboten. Nachdem seit meinem Design der Platine im Sommer 2015 einige Komponenten nicht mehr erhältlich waren oder sich erheblich verteuert hatten und ich auf den einen oder anderen kleinen Fehler entdeckt hatte, wagte ich mich an ein kleines Redesign, welches ich hier vorstellen und soweit möglich ist, die Quelldaten veröffentlichen oder zumindest die Daten für einen Nachbau bereitstellen. Konkret habe ich die gefederte Stahkugel, welche bisher als Vorderrad diente gegen eine Kunststoffrolle von Pololu, den Jumper zum Umstecken der Versorgungsspannung (Umschalter Programmiermodus/Fahrtmodus) gegen einen richtigen Schalter getauscht, die Schottkydiode auch in SMD verbaut und die Möglichkeit vorgesehen, direkt auf der Hauptplatine ein Bluetooth-Modul (HC-06) zu verbauen. Damit könnte der Roboter dann ferngesteuert werden.

As you probably couldn’t miss, I held a Lightbug robot building workshop at the Maker Faire in Vienna this year. Since I initially designed the PCB in summer 2015 some components drastically increased in price or were discontinued and I also discovered some minor mistakes. So I risked a small redesign which I’d like to present here and also provide the source data or at least everything you’ll nedd to build a robot on your own. Precisely the changes were: I threw out the steel ball which functioned as the front wheel and replaced it with a plastic ball caster from Pololu, the pin header with the jumper for selecting the power source (mode switch between programming and running) was exchanged for a real switch, the schottky diode now also is in an SMD package and I made it possible to add a bluetooth module (HC-06) directly to the main PCB so the robot could be controlled remotely.

Jetzt ist es wieder eine Woche vorbei, der Stress abgeklungen und alle Sachen wieder verräumt. Letzes Wochenende, am 16. und 17. April 2016 fand in Wien zum ersten Mal eine Maker Faire statt, bei der ich wie in der Ankündigung mit 3 Projekten dabei war. Die beiden Workshops, den Lightbug-Roboter und den Holzflieger nach den Entwürfen von Leonardo da Vinci, habe ich ja bereits angekündigt. Zusätzlich hatte ich noch einen eigenen Stand mit Holzmodellen nach Skizzen von Leonardo da Vinci, wie man ihn schön am Foto unten sieht. Im Anschluss würde ich gern ein wenig von meinen Erfahrungen mit der Maker Faire berichten.

It has already been a week, the stress is gone and all stuff put back where it belongs. I am talking about the Maker Faire which took place in Vienna the first time on April the 16th and 17th. As I announced about a month ago, I participated with 3 projects in total. First the 2 workshops, with the Lightbug robot and the Leonardo da Vinci inspired glider, but also with my own booth where I presented wood models inspired by Leonardo da Vinci sketches as you can see in the picture below. In the following part of this post I would like to describe some of my experiences at the Maker Faire.

Ready for Maker Faire Vienna 2016

Morgen geht’s los: Die Maker Faire Vienna 2016 startet!
Nach einigen sehr stressigen Wochen mit durchgearbeiteten Nächten und erneuten Löt-Orgien mit den Lightbug-Platinen habe ich buchstäblich in letzter Minute alles fertig bekommen. Mein Stand mit der Nummer E67 neben dem, übrigens extrem genialen, Metalab-Dome ist fertig hergerichtet und selbst der Roboter-Workshop für morgen ist fertig vorbereitet. Ich bin jetzt auf jeden Fall sehr gespannt wie das Wochenende so laufen wird und werde davon berichten!

Tomorrow it finally starts: the Maker Faire Vienna 2016!
After some extremely stressful weeks with some nights where I worked through and another solder orgy with the Lightbug PCBs I made it literally in the last minutes. My booth with the number E67 right next to the, by the way extremely awesome, Metalab dome is done. Also I prepared the workshop area for my robot building workshop tomorrow. I am really curious how this weekend will turn out and will report about it!

Ankündigung / Announcement Maker Faire Vienna 2016

Am 16. und 17. April 2016 findet in Wien zum ersten Mal eine Maker Faire statt und ich möchte diesen kurzen Beitrag nutzen um anzukündigen dass ich mich mit insgesamt 3 Projekten daran beteiligen werde. Als erstes bin ich mit einem eigenen Stand dort vertreten, wo ich gerne diverse Holzmodelle nach den Entwürfen von Leonardo da Vinci, ähnlich meinem Gleiter, ausstellen möchte. Was genau zu sehen sein wird, möchte ich noch nicht verraten, dazu muss jeder schon persönlich vorbeikommen oder das halbe Jahr danach abwarten bis ich endlich was dazu poste. ;) Der Stand hat die Nummer E67 wird sich im Erdgeschoss gleich neben dem Metalab-Dome befinden. Meine anderen beiden Beiträge sind Workshops, am Samstag von 11:00 bis 12:30 kann man bei mir im Workshopraum 4 einen Lightbug-Roboter bauen. Und zu guter Letzt haben am Sonntag von 14:15 bis 15:15 alle die Möglichkeit einen Holzflieger nach den Entwürfen von Leonardo da Vinci zu bauen. Für mich ist die Maker Faire das erste Event dieser Art, daher bin ich schon sehr gespannt wie meine Projekte so ankommen beziehungsweise wie das Ganze allgemein ablaufen wird. Falls ich in den 2 Tagen ein wenig Zeit finden werde mich selbst umzusehen, werde ich natürlich in einem Beitrag hier davon berichten.

On April the 16th and 17th a Maker Faire takes place the first time in Vienna and I therefor would like use this short entry to announce that I will be participating with 3 projects in total. The first one is a booth where I would like to display some wood models of sketches by Leonardo da Vinci, similar to the glider I already posted here. If you wannt to know what I am displaying you have to visit my booth or wait about half a year until I finally find time to post something about it. ;) My booth has the number E67 and will be on the ground floor, right next to the Metalab dome. The other 2 entries for the Maker Faire are both workshops with the first one on Saturday from 11:00 till 12:30 where you can assemble a Lightbug robot in the workshop room number 4. Last but not least you can build a Leonardo da Vinci inspired glider on Sunday from 14:15 till 15:15. The Maker Faire is the first event of this kind for me so I’m curious how well my projects will be received and also how the event will work out over all. If I find some time in these 2 days to take a look around, I will of course post something about it here.
